Sylvia Bordelon Peavy


SIMMESPORT - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Simmesport for Mrs. Clarence (Sylvia) Peavy, 89, who passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Lafayette General Hospital.

Internment will be at the Christ the King Mausoleum.

The celebrant for the funeral mass will be Father George Krosfield and con-celebrated by Father James Nellikunnel.

The family requests visitation in Christ the King Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The rosary will be at 12 noon.

Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia Ann Peavy McQuillin of Lafayette, Wanda Peavy Cumella and her husband, Frank of Louisville, Kentucky: 3 grandchildren: Roxanne Breaux and her husband, Edward of Lafayette, Mark Allen Cumella and his wife, Joan Dugas of Louisville, Kentucky, and Myka Cumella Pearce and her husband, Justin of Louisville, Kentucky; 9 great grandchildren: Christopher Peavy Breaux, Edward Flynn Breaux, Jr., Lauren Elize Breaux and William Edgar Breaux of Lafayette, Gage Anthony Nicholas Cumella, Zachary Paul Joseph Cumella, Cole Francis Paphinutius Cumella, Kennedy Lynn Pearce and Baylee Renee Pearce of Louisville, Kentucky. She was survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Oliver Bordelon of Goudeau and Eliza Couvillion Bordelon of Cottonport, her sister Lucille B. Pepiton and her husband Peter Pepiton, a brother, Robert Bordelon, Sr. and her granddaughter, Stacey Lynn Cumella.

A native of Simmesport, Sylvia graduated salutatorian of the class of 1937 from Simmesport High School and attended the Baton Rouge Business College. She married Clarence Allen Peavy, of Plaquemine in 1938 and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. She was very active in her much loved community and church. She served as a member of the St. Ann Circle, the Blue Army Catholic Organization, Christ the King Altar Society and the Woodman of the World Organization.

She worked as the Secretary to the Mayor of Simmesport for 22 years and became the City Clerk until the time of her retirement. She then worked in the offices of Central Pecan Shelling Company and Gulf Oil in Mansura. She served as a Notary Public for over 30 years.

Pallbearers will be Frank Cumella, Dr. Edward Breaux, Mark Cumella, Christopher Breaux, Edward Breaux, Jr., William Breaux and Gage Cumella.

Honorary Pallbearers are Justin Pearce, Zachary Cumella, Cole Cumella, Peter Pepiton II and Paul Pepiton.

Music will be provided by the nieces and nephews of the Peavy family.

The family would like to thank her many lifelong friends, the staff and friends that supported her so lovingly at Rosewood Assisted Living, the staff at Lafayette General Hospital and Dr. Michael Alexander for his kindness, care and friendship.

In lieu of flowers, she requested donations to St. Judes Hospital in memory of Stacey Lynn Cumella: St. Judes Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or to Christ the King Church, P.O. Box 186, Simmesport, Louisiana 71369.
